MAWGAN PORTH, 1890: A NEW POEM...

Mawgan Porth, 1890

A single skiff lies askew,
Leaning, fatigued,
Where the Menalhyl river
Splays out onto the beach
From the Vale of Lanherne,
Its progress by Atlantic tides
Beleaguered…

Yet the attraction here is not leisure,
The sea, surfing, or holiday accommodation,
For this dour Victorian congregation
Harvests seaweed for fertiliser:
A study of labour, not of pleasure…
