KENILWORTH SPORTING v AFC COVENTRY RANGERS: The Mowdog's Coventry Telegraph Cup-tie preview...

 The Coventry Telegraph Cup preview:

Kenilworth Sporting v AFC Coventry Rangers...

This tie brings together two teams which have started promisingly in the Midland League Division 2. It is likely to be a strange return to Gypsy Lane for Rangers' boss Kevin Kingham but both teams will surely be keen to progress in this competition.

GYPSY LANE...

The top six or seven teams in Midland 2 juggle about regularly but there seems to be little to choose between them on any given day, so with Sutton United and Knowle FC currently leading the way, Sporting lie 3rd with 5 wins, 4 draws and a single loss from their 10 matches. Their goals ratio is 24-13 and of course they have 19 points.

Leading scorer is Chris Jones with 5, closely followed by Jason Evans and Tyrone Wilson, both with 4 (according to the Full-Time website...)

Rangers have played 9 matches, winning 5, drawing 3 and losing only their season opener at Alcester Town. They have a goals ratio of 22-13 and have amassed 18 points. The leading goalscorer appears to be Fola Fagbemi with 10, again according to the Full-Time website...

JEAN 'THE TANK' DAKOURI: PRECIOUS FOR SPORTING IN MIDFIELD...

Both ties were away from home and both times Kenilworth didn't concede a goal. Firstly, in the Birmingham Saturday Vase, Sporting won 0-4 at RS Sports from the Coventry Alliance. Evans, with a side-foot finish, Kyle Jaynes with a drilled strike, Lorcan Towey from 18 yards and substitute Hamza Siddique with a neat turn and smart finish, scored the goals. Manager Martin Ascroft praised the RS goalkeeper's performance afterwards but he declared that it had been a comfortable win.

In the Les James Cup, a 0-1 victory at Midland 3 outfit Enville Athletic came courtesy of an 80th minute strike by Will Hawkins, whilst Sam Delaney was voted the team's MVP by the opponents. Manager Martin Ascroft felt that his much changed team didn't really deserve to win the tie, despite missing a number of chances.

Rangers' three cup-ties so far this season...

A 1-4 victory on penalties in the Coventry Telegraph Cup, following a 2-2 draw at Midland 3 Coventry Dunlop, was achieved through a Fola Fagbemi brace in the 90 minutes, then penalties by Fagbemi, Josh Bird, Dan Monger and Alpha Wurie in the shootout.

FAGBEMI, LEFT: FINE FORM THIS SEASON...

In the Birmingham Saturday Vase, goals by Joe Gardner, George Swain and substitute Connoll Farrell in the 80th minute saw Rangers overcome Earlswood Town 3-0, who lie just above AFC in the league. Gardner's volley from 18 yards began the scoring, Swain's close range header followed and after Town had seen a player red-carded, substitute Farrell ran by a defender to slip in the last goal.

POWELL IN TYPICAL ACTION FOR RANGERS v KNOWLE RECENTLY...

Last week, Rangers had a tough win at home v Barnt Green Spartak in the Les James Cup, fighting back from a 0-2 deficit with strikes by Gardner, skipper Jordan Powell and an own goal. Fagbemi was voted Rangers' MVP by Spartak. The visitors had led through a penalty, then Jordan Powell's clearance bounced off an opponent into the net for a second BGS goal.

Fagbemi ran clear to score and reduce the arrears, before a Rory Turnbull centre was deflected into his own net by a BGS defender. Finally, Powell rapped in the winner with just 15 minutes left to see AFC into the next round.
