WOLVERHAMPTON SPORTING COMMUNITY v BEWDLEY TOWN: POSTPONED...

West Midlands League Messes Up At Pride Park…

Despite the Head of Referees from the league passing the Hazel Lane pitch fit in mid afternoon for the Wolverhampton Sporting Community v Bewdley Town match to be played, by 7pm the match official had concluded that it wasn’t fit at all and duly postponed it, despite the earlier decision. No rain had fallen in the meantime, there was sand on the soft surface in parts but the referee’s conclusion caused a good number of incredulous people suddenly to become rather angry.

Much work had been done during the day to prepare the pitch to play on, players and staff from both teams had rushed to the ground, many of them after a day’s work. The Bewdley guests had travelled a distance too and after having been assured that the earlier ‘pitch inspection’ was more of a formality, the visitors must have been well annoyed.

I had travelled from Solihull on the M42 and then paid an M6 Toll charge of £5.50 to reach the ground on time and so I too was unimpressed by the apparent lack of communication by the league’s officials.

It was my first visit to the old Great Wyrley FC ground and in fairness, the welcome I received was excellent.

Once again this highlights the common sense which should be implemented concerning the postponement of games. Is it not simple just to make an early decision to appease all parties?

Or maybe just get out there and play, as I used to…

I could have gone to watch Long Eaton or Coventry United last night but instead I wasted fuel and also the Toll charge cash I could ill afford…

I assume the officials were handed some of their match fees?

Thanks a lot West Midlands League. I guess ignorance really can be bliss…

I went to Pride Park but there was no pride in the work done by the league on that particular evening…

Badly done…
