Nailed Quay
Ageing roofs nailed firmly on,
Rustic and basking in angled sunlight;
Gull avidly forages upon
A slipway’s wedge before taking to flight…
Mooring posts screwed down tight,
Boats like coracles list in the low tide mire;
Thick baulks block doorways from the might
Of gales, the ocean and wild storms dire…
Yet like a scruffy daytime inn on a roadside
Is transformed by its welcoming floodlit show,
This plain, ordinary and dingy quayside
Is illuminated by sunlight’s glorious glow…
