PREVIEW OF THE NOTTS SENIOR LEAGUE CUP FINAL, 18TH MAY...

Preview: Stapleford Town v Southwell City
(Nottinghamshire Senior League Cup Final)

Basford United will host this Final on Saturday afternoon May 18th, at 5pm. It will be the last game of the season for my blog:

…and a return to Basford after too many seasons away.

League Champions Stapleford Town face third placed Southwell City in this showpiece for the Notts Senior League. Town’s season was a real success, winning 28, drawing only 2 and losing just 4 of their 34 matches, amassing 104 goals and conceding only 32, thus achieving a goal-difference of +72.

Top goalscorer overall was Adam Hassall with 38, followed by Junior Rodriguez with 20 and Mitch Robinson, who netted 18.
ADAM HASSALL...

Most overall appearances were made by Luke Guadagni with 35, then James Hunter who made 34 and next was Rodriguez who managed 33.
MITCH ROBINSON...

Strange though, that Stapleford were unable to beat Southwell, nor runners-up Bingham Town in the league. Two defeats by Bingham, plus a 1-0 defeat at Southwell (Liam Moran the scorer, although Town had a pair of players sent-off) and a 1-1 draw with them at home (goals by Hassall and Jonny Nussey) meant just 1 point from 12 for Stapleford against their title challengers.

Progress in the Senior League Cup for Stapleford saw them win 1-5 at AFC Dunkirk (goals by Hassall 2, Callum Dunn, Robinson and Rodriguez), then came an overtime win at Ravenshead by 2-3, despite trailing 2-0 at the interval (goals by Ben Cheatle, Hassall and Rodriguez), before a 4-3 win v Beeston in the Semi-Final at the Ron Steel Sports ground, courtesy of goals from Robinson 2, Jack Upton and Ben Smedley, meant qualification for the Final this Saturday.
OMG... IT'S PAULO PILIERO!
HE KEEPS TURNING UP WHERE I GO...
HOPE YOU'RE WELL, MATE...

Southwell finished third in the division with 22 wins, 6 draws and 6 defeats, with a goals ratio of 94-30, a goal-difference of +64 and a points total of 72.

Top overall goalscorer Calum Law netted 22, Jonny Nussey scored 19 and Oli Clarke 14.
CALUM LAW...

Most appearances overall were made by Dan Brown with 39, Ryan Fletcher with 38 and Ant Brown with 37.
JONNY NUSSEY...

The road to the Final for City saw them begin with a 1-2 win at Awsworth Villa (both goals by substitute Ewan Hill), followed by a remarkable 6-4 victory in overtime, against 8-man Bingham Town. The goals were scored by Nussey 4, Rob Haigh and Hill.
RYAN FLETCHER...

City had been 0-3 behind, despite Bingham having a player dismissed but then Southwell fought back to 2-3 and equalised just 8 minutes from the end. The overtime period saw Bingham lead again but Southwell nabbed another equaliser through Hill and then Bingham had a second player sent-off. This unpleasant situation resulted in a third Town player being red-carded and City took full advantage with two more goals through Nussey… Some game to witness, I guess!

Another overtime win at FC Cavaliers, 1-2, with goals by Brad McDonald and Jon Upton took them to a Semi-Final tie v Aslockton & Orston, which City won 2-0, courtesy of goals by Clarke and Nussey.

As a consequence of the success attained by Southwell in their encounters with Stapleford this term, confidence will surely be high, although Town’s desperation to prove themselves against City will doubtless be very evident.

Full coverage of the match will be at themowdog.blogspot.co.uk from Sunday morning, including an independent report, images, screenshots and video highlights with full commentary…

All the best to both teams for this important game…
