THE PLAYGROUND FOR THE FOX CUBS... (My new poem about the cubs in the rear garden...)

The Playground For The Fox Cubs…

There had previously been an under the fence investigation

By a healthy looking dog fox but also occasionally

A vixen, whose reluctance to approach a green

Ground feeder seemed like she was restricted and restrained

By elastic, preventing her reaching the morsels

As she leaned forth. Her slim face displayed a nervous

And fearful disposition, maybe snatching at food

Then retreating into the relative safety of shrubs and greenery…

There was then some surprise and not a little apprehension

When three fox cubs appeared quite suddenly

One evening, leaping and bounding around the scene,

Caught on film by a static night camera, unrestrained

And joyous, play fighting and relishing the morsels

Provided. Their behaviour displayed a frivolous,

Open inquisitiveness and a feisty, impish mood,

As into the early hours of the morning they continued their revelry…

Like newly born lambs they sprang and pranced,

The camaraderie their playfulness merely enhanced;

Chasing and twisting, crouching and turning

With eager expressions, wary but discerning.

Like puppies they rushed hither and thither in the faint garden light,

Eventually dashing away into the bleak and cold April night…

29th April 2024…

A dog and a vixen have been regular visitors to the small rear garden but for the last two nights, three cubs have found their way in and have used the space as a playground as well as somewhere to find nourishment.

Their antics have been entertaining to watch…
