Winter Day In Nyhavn…
(From Paul Fischer’s 1924 painting…)
The loitering policeman, the striding child carrying
Something of importance, the fashionable lady conversing
With a young vendor, clutching her umbrella and tarrying
In the icy slush along a dull and chilly street, are all wearing
Dark, dull, warm clothing, as the Nyhavn district freezing lies,
Its chimneys billowing out smoke to reflect the layers of fallen snow…
An ashen row of terraces is by one other in bright yellow disrupted,
The grim weathered greys and reds so rudely interrupted,
As, hands in pockets and heads in hats, some folks engage in heated
Conversation, others tread the slush, their hurrying limited
And careful horses haul a heavy wagon with wide, alert eyes
On the waterfront, their progress treacherous and deliberately slow…

2nd January 2025…
Nyhavn is a waterfront and canal district of Copenhagen, Denmark, which is now an entertainment centre and is known for its brightly coloured houses and bars…
The 1924 painting though looks slightly less welcoming!
I really liked it, however…
