BARBED-WIRE FROM THE WESTERN FRONT...

Wire

Like dislocations
Bloodied fractures,
Of skeletal fragmentations
Lashed to rusted wire
To petrify,
The barbs
Horrify;
Stunted and spiked
To terrify…

Grim, sepia skewers
Bereft of rotted flesh:
Bone shards stripped by rodent scavengers,
Barb tines gorged by War’s harbingers…
And despite the passing of a century,
The barbarity fails
To pacify…

I have just acquired a section of World War 1 barbed-wire from the Western Front.

Looking at it on the carpet brought a disconcerting feeling…
