RACING CLUB WARWICK DEFENDER MARTIN HUTCHCOX WRITES ABOUT THE 3-2 VICTORY OVER THE BADGERS FROM BROCTON...
"Today was first game at home this season, where we had a fair amount of success last year. We want to make it a bit of a fortress here and dominate games with teams fearing to come, knowing they won't go away with anything.
We started OK, keeping the ball well but with little to show for it until Knighty scored a deserved goal. Not long afterwards and against the run of play though we let them back in, albeit from a soft free-kick which in my opinion was a poor decision from the referee.
The good thing about the lads this year is that we have that bite and drive to go back down the other end and score which full credit to Knighty he did and got his second of the game before we closed the half out not really getting out of second gear.
We were in a similar position to the week before against Bolehall where we knew we were in control but couldnt just see the game out, for Brocton, like Bolehall had a few dangerous attacking players.
The 2nd half started again with us in control and getting a 3rd from an own goal, but then, as many teams do when going 2 goals up, we sat back and allowed them to get higher up the pitch and put more pressure on. This paid off with them scoring a dubious offside goal with maybe 15 minutes left to play.
Credit to the back four though and Crossy in goal for blocking them out as they went for it towards the end, but we just had a bit too much and got the win that overall I think we just about deserved.
Certainly not at our best, but a positive start to a long season after a good pre-season unbeaten and everyone is looking fit and sharp.
With this being Scotty's first season as manager, if we can have good cup runs and improve on our league position from last season I think we can class that as a good year. He has assembled a great, strong squad with two top coaches in Bairdy and Andy Taylor, that should be challenging with the 'big boys' and hopefully laying a foundation for years to come.
(Great to see you Mowdog, have a good season mate!)"
