The Upton Warren Boat…
(nothing for the Oxford or Cambridge crews to worry about here…)
At this point the cox,
A grey heron, perched in dismay
As its thirteen-cormorant crew
Flagged.
Some preened, others lounged or dragged
Themselves about the boat in disarray…
Thus by this point the cox,
The wry heron, hunched in display
At its sad, discordant crew,
Haggard.
Some leaned, others floundered like laggards:
Lamentable rowers in a pitiable array…

8th February 2022
The scene at Upton Warren’s Nature Reserve on 7th February was amusing because with a heron looking on from one end of a small, boat-like stretch of land on a lake and thirteen cormorants hanging about upon it, I was reminded of a really disorganised boat crew, hardly prepared for rowing…
Just made me smile…
