Home For The Fallen…
(Burbage’s War Memorial…)
A rose garden. Fitting for the fallen
And the returning. A nook, nature’s intense
Yet intriguing space for remembrance.
The old terraced Burbage dwellings remain
And curiously, individually retain
Their understated, welcoming essence,
Whilst the church spire peeks its presence,
Preaching peace to ease a village’s pain.
And the soldier’s gaze is determined, if sullen…
The figure is pallid, his rifle upturned.
An infantryman, his helmet spurned
For a soft cap, mourns the dead
By a simple bow of his sculpted head…

Really liked the layout in Burbage, for the remembrance garden seems surrounded by homes, as if it is at the heart of a community welcoming both returning soldiers and perhaps the souls of fallen comrades too…
The panel inside the garden displays a couple of images of the same scene in previous years and it seemed only right to add my view to those, showing how really, little has changed…
