The Altar At Barnt Green…
Tucked away, brick built, the memorial
In Barnt Green to the Great War huddles within
St Andrew’s church grounds, almost privately.
A soldier, grim faced and austere, rifle slung
Over one shoulder, the other hand
Delving inside a pocket, stands grimly
Alongside a sailor at ease, hand on hip, staring belligerently.
Yet both small figures are dwarfed by Christ, hung
From a large cross, absorbing their suffering and sin.
And those weathered sculptures portray a resilience mercurial…
