The Becalmed Moustachioed Infantryman Of Catshill…
There is a gentility about the infantryman, a soldier
Quite ordinary, wearing a uniform to match.
His helmet somehow seems a little too rounded and high,
Yet he stands respectfully, honouring every Catshill comrade,
Forever holding dear their precious sacrifice…
There is a neatness about the infantryman and an understated fear.
The dapper, moustachioed and staid guard is on permanent watch,
His puttees so neatly wrapped, not one layer slightly awry.
Hands rest upon upturned rifle as if in prayer, but in silhouette and shade
The emotion seems even more poignant, his solemn poise precise…

The memorial in the village of Catshill, near Bromsgrove is beautifully looked after and the soldier depicted looks rightly ordinary, at peace, neat, peaceful and smartly turned out.
No warrior, merely a comrade, dressed to respect the fallen…
