The Badger & The Beech Seed Shower…
The silence, the drop in the evening breeze and the absence
Of any visible wildlife as a weak sun waned low in the sky
Were all rather quickly forgotten when a sole badger,
An outrider, skirted the copse feasting
Upon scattered treats, a mixed sustenance
Of crushed biscuits, peanuts, grapes and badger food, laid awry.
As the interloper sidled amongst the greenery, the cadger
Seemed to be scouting for the clan, sniffing and tasting…
But then the beech seeds fell like loud droplets of rain
Upon leaves, the dry and untidy brick-strewn ground
And watchers’ heads, like a plopping solid shower to their disdain.
Yet the wary badger fed on, undaunted by the echoing sound…

I genuinely thought that a random light shower of rain was falling until the seeds were spotted as they struck the ground.
The falling began quite suddenly, just after the appearance of just one badger, despite the feast provided.
There were no squirrels present…
Once again, the absence of members from the usually eager to feed Temple Balsall cete was concerning…
