The Mummified Badger In The Lane…
It was the smell.
A nauseous stink pervaded a breezy, sunlit
August afternoon in the lane.
Eyes were drawn to a cadaver,
A mummified badger,
Dark, yet smooth like the remains
Of some kind of fabric,
Its feet with maggots crawling…
It looked like hell.
A rictus revealed harsh teeth, the torso was split,
Its expression somehow grimly inane.
It lay snug against a vehicle’s fender,
Unearthed. A once buried badger,
Stark, yet cruelly exposed, its pains
Evident. A tableau sick,
Its horrific excavation appalling…

21st August 2023…
Seen beneath a bush on Temple Lane, Temple Balsall.
The vehicle’s fender was almost a memorial to the dead badger…
