A POEM FOR REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY...
Poppies Bought At Secondary School…
(A poem about the early 1960s…)
I was given some cash to be expended
On a basic red, symbolic poppy,
Which I would duly buy.
Plain, ordinary, befitting
A lad who, I now
Appreciate,
Knew his rightful place…
I was then privy to the extended
Version with green leaf, in relief,
Which I could not buy.
Fine, special, unbefitting
A lad who could not
Compete,
With working class face…
Pete Ray
At Grammar School, where other ‘middle-class’ lads bought the more expensive poppies.
I was never able to…
