The Moles Dig In Enough To Down The Swans…
Buckingham Athletic 2-3 Binfield
Binfield, being the Moles, might have been more comfortable playing football on a rutted lawn rather than on the decent Stratford Fields turf, which was apparently acquired from of all places, Australia, for the guests’ passing was often errant, allowing the hosts to stay in this FA Vase contest, despite conceding an early headed goal by Mole defender Michael Walton. After a battle of a second period, two quick Binfield goals both by replacements, appeared to settle the Moles at last and for a short while they looked more assured in possession. However, the Swans rattled home two late goals to force some real drama in the final scene and I guess that the home coaches and players would feel that they deserved to take the tie into overtime. Binfield worked home ‘keeper Lewis Dench more though, for he saved a trio of one-on-ones, whereas the Swans rarely threatened Mole-keeper Gary Aulsbury and the home team were mostly offered half-chances, rather than very acceptable ones. Binfield’s Jamie Knight began to prise open the home defence more as the game wore on, whilst striker Liam Ferdinand looked more comfortable in a deeper role but the hosts’ skipper Neil King, a solid presence, was strong in midfield and with strikers Robbie Carter and Ririo Oshima looking dangerous for much of the afternoon, there was always a doubt about the outcome of the game.
THE TOSS... |
An early disputed free-kick, deep and left brought the opening goal, following an error-strewn opening and Jack Broome’s sweeping delivery was met by Mole central defender Walton’s forehead just beyond the far post, beating Ryan Marsden and the ensuing downward header beat Dench. The goal suggested that Binfield might relax and cruise to a comfortable victory but due to inaccuracy in their passing and a degree of hesitation at times, their King-inspired hosts began to assert themselves more.

...& SURELY PLAIN-SAILING? |
Josh Hooper twice shot off target, Aulsbury was challenged for a fine Oshima cross by Robbie Carter but was relieved to gain a goal-kick, then Aulsbury sprawled right to gather a 25 yarder by King, after he had dispossessed Mole Jamie Connor and when Robbie Carter managed an angled effort from inside-right, Aulsbury beat out the shot. A late challenge by midfielder Josh Hooper brought a booking but still the hosts conjured up regular efforts at goal; an Oshima cross deflected off Mole George Lock over the ‘keeper and clubbed against the base of the far upright and effective home left-back Marsden’s free-kick struck Walton in the customary defensive wall.
MOORE DOESN'T LIKE HOT CHESTNUTS... |
The offensive contribution of Binfield before the break wasn’t too good, for striker Sean Moore saw things not go his way, especially as he was lurking on the left-side and appeared to prefer to work with his right boot. Lock shot low at Dench, who then saved at the feet of the marauding Ferdinand, central defender James Charlton got his head to a right-wing corner and was alert enough to volley just over the target as the ball fell and both Ferdinand following a run and skipper Alex Luis from a free-kick, drove well over the home crossbar. The best chance though fell to Connor, who shoved a low shot wide of the left upright after being tastefully fed by Ferdinand. The interval was reached, the rain eased then resumed and Binfield returned to the field to negotiate the Buckingham stumbling block once more.

O'DELL TURNS... |
The attrition resumed too but it was the Swans who hissed first when Walton was baulked by Robbie Carter and his persistence offered Jack Carter an opportunity but although he was unable to strike a shot, Oshima did and his 19 yarder took a slight deflection as it scraped the crossbar although the officials missed the deviation. Josh Hooper nodded King’s free-kick wide but the fact that he was able to get in a header at all must have frustrated Binfield manager Mr Herridge. Patrick Hooper replaced Jack Carter for the hosts so now there were two Hoopers and one Carter on the pitch, not one Hooper and two Carters: all very confusing. Aulsbury did enough to deny Pat Hooper who had galloped unnoticed through the middle, Mark O’Dell was replaced by Buckingham but then Knight began to forage with more success for the visitors.
Connor had already benefited when a diagonal Oshima pass was intercepted but his shot from distance had been way too high, yet it was only when the Moles replaced Moore and Connor with Luke Hayden and Matt Jones that Knight became more inventive and influential. Dench saved well at the feet of Luke Scope and Binfield added a brace of goals to precede a period of dominance. First, a set-piece was dealt with by the Swans but the ball found its way to Hayden on the left flank, who retrieved it, made for the byeline, crossed directly onto Jones’ head at the far post beyond Marsden and the ball fizzed over the surprised Dench, who must have been drenched by the persistent rain, into the top right corner of the net.

HEADER BY JONES... |
Secondly, Knight won possession in midfield as King and Pat Hooper dallied and Ferdinand calmly fed the ball left to Hayden and his low left-footer from 17 yards, left side of the penalty-box, beat Dench and rolled into the bottom right corner of the goal.

THE LITTLE DOG WAGS ITS TAIL TO CELEBRATE... |
A reckless O’Dell challenge was rewarded with that caution I mentioned earlier and then after Scope was replaced by Jake White for the Moles, the dutiful Broome was cautioned following his warning in the first-half. Although Ferdinand was denied one-on-one by the bravery of Dench, the 0-3 Binfield lead and confidence gained therefrom was suddenly stirred by Oshima’s fine strike. Ferdinand’s pass was intercepted by Marsden, his long ball was flicked on by Robbie Carter, Josh Hooper chased it at inside-left, the type of thing he had been wont to do all through the game. He retrieved it and fed a pass back to Oshima, who cut inside Lock and rapped a 22 yard shot inside the near post, although Aulsbury was probably unhappy to be beaten through such a gap and from that distance.

GOOD FINISH BY OSHIMA... |
From having their ascendancy stirred, it was soon shaken by Robbie Carter, who profited from a fine left-flank centre by the clever Oshima, who had picked Lock and the tall forward lobbed a header from a ridiculously tight angle over the frustrated Aulsbury and into the net. The Swan striker had emerged between Luis and Charlton to contest the header.

ANGLED HEADER BY ROBBIE CARTER... |
The visitors really were made to work in those closing stages and following approach work by Josh Hooper and King, who was plundering through midfield like a bloodthirsty Viking thrusting through ancient York, Robbie Carter’s low shot was deflected for a corner by Charlton. A late flag-kick by Marsden ended with a slight melee then a shot by Josh Menday, which drifted too high over the Mole-goal.
FERDINAND: ASTUTE PASSER IN A DEEPER ROLE... |
Shaken and stirred though they were, the Moles dug in for the final moments and exited Buckingham with a tie against Bracknell Town to savour. Certainly Robbie Carter impressed in attack for the Swans but the footwork and awareness of Oshima were pleasures to admire on occasions. Defenders Sol Janecki and Dan Staley managed the Moles’ offense fairly successfully for the most part and ‘keeper Dench advanced to deal with onrushing opponents with success on the day.
