THE JAWS & THE STORM: A NEW POEM...

The Jaws & The Storm…

(Kirsty Elson’s 2019 calendar May image…)

Blackened, a doom-laden sky
Threatens a two-masted schooner,
Navigating, negotiating
 A grey, tomb-like ocean,
Beneath a stubborn full moon,
Its auspicious white gleam
Contemplating, complementing
The boat’s pure white sails
Stirring in the lurching motion…

Blackened, a predatory sea-beast
Devours the two-masted vessel,
Ingesting, digesting
The unsuspecting prey
Beneath one huge, bland eye,
Its incongruous white beam
Unblinking, unshrinking
At the boat’s quivering sails,
Blurring as it lumbers astray…

The 2019 calendar containing Kirsty Elson’s remarkable designs has this image for May…

The image features on the calendar’s cover too and although it is surely a black sky, a full moon and a sailing ship, I was reminded of a sea-monster with a large white eye, a whale-like creature devouring a vessel…
