Dull Dusk Ekes Out A Peach Sunset…
(Mawgan Porth, 13th November 2022)
There was no evidence of sunset colour as I trod sand
Eastwards across a low-tide Mawgan Porth beach.
Its frothing surf was some way out of reach
As I continued to plod, opening an angle
Of vision to face the sea head-on, then stand
In awe, for there the sky was a tepid pale peach…
Darkness then spilled blue ink upon the ocean,
Which reflected upon hard sand still damp
From a withdrawing tide, each pool an indigo lamp
As the occasional curl of weed lay black in a tangle.
Breaking waves hurled surf in a shifting motion
But the invisible sun soon made an indelible stamp…
Amber filled the sky with headlands silhouetted black,
Like a seascape created by an artist’s desire
To set the Cornish evening sky on fire.
Waves rushed and sprayed at every angle,
Yet the sunset’s beauty would inevitably lack
The power to deny the night and its darkening dire…
