Puttees, Pouches & Pockets…
(The Worthing War Memorial…)
There was joy in his arm extension, holding out
His helmet in appreciation of a long campaign ended.
Rifle clutched, albeit not upturned in sorrow nor
In threatening mode but rather like a tool or implement…
His puttees, his pouches and his pockets clung about
Him. Bayonet and knife safely sheathed and tended.
Demeanour stolid, steadfast, yet weary of a cruel war,
He stares defiantly, his muted emotion a testament
To comrades mentally scarred, the dead and the maimed,
His expression maybe wondering just who should be blamed…
