The Barking Collies, The Bellowing Shepherd, The Bolting Sheep & The Badgered Mustelid…
Between cloud and land, a strip of virtual fire
Heralded a windless Sunday’s imminent demise.
The lane lay silent, the copse stripped and raw
And wintery,
As a chill descended and dusk’s ominous
Mask began to silhouette the taut barbed wire…
Collies’ barking soon pierced the gloom’s withering attire,
Chasing bolting sheep amid the raucous cries
Of a shepherd’s bellowing instructions and furore.
Until presently,
Across my eyeline, a mustelid loped, hungry and cautious,
Then retreated in response and fear of the cacophony dire…

Suddenly, peace was shattered in Temple Balsall as a shepherd and his dogs went through what seemed like some dusk training.
When one badger appeared, it seemed shocked by the yells of the shepherd, rather than the barking of the dogs and quickly returned to its sett…
Several times, I could make out from the lane, small groups of sheep racing about in front of a dog…
