IT STOOD SHYLY AMONGST THE REEDS... (A Chinese water deer at Blakeney, Norfolk...)

It Stood Shyly Amongst The Reeds…

( A Chinese Water Deer at Blakeney, Norfolk…)

As the sun prepared its amber evening display,

The September air surrounded my stroll from Blakeney Point,

Seaward.

Unseen curlews called out from mud-caked creeks nearby,

As silhouetted vessels formed queer black shapes

Against a pale peach sky, blotched by leaden clouds,

Westward.

And something brown caught my tired eye…

It stood shyly amongst the reeds in a shallow salty pool

And it quickly spotted my presence, large ears pricked,

As it returned my stare with such a gentle countenance.

It then sniffed the air as the marshes and creeks turned cool,

Its loneliness quite piteous, before it suddenly flicked

Its head to the left, aware, alert and belying its reticence…

A Chinese water deer lurked in the reeds at Blakeney Point.

I had only looked its way when I saw something brown and thought it might have been a section of broken tree, until it moved…

It seemed almost pathetic, paddling in the salty pool but its eyes were so gentle and quite beautiful…
