TARRYING NEAR THE SHIP... (My new poem inspired by Isobel Wrightson's painting..).

 Tarrying Near The Ship…

(Inspired by Isobel Wrightson’s painting…)

Men wearing flat caps and trilbies loiter outside

The inn, smoking, idling and tarrying quayside.

A boot rests upon a rail, as the occupant stares out

Into Mounts Bay, assessing the wind and the tide no doubt.

Three small vessels lie moored, yet idly shifting

And an obedient dog wags its tail, patiently waiting…

Chimneys billow smoke from coal fires crackling,

Dull, drying nets over the harbour wall lie hanging

Like dark fingers seeping over the granite stones.

Gulls hover for carrion with their wild screaming tones,

Pallid buildings huddle silently around Mousehole’s quay,

A fishing village, a quiet haven, a curious mystery…

The white construction to the right of the Ship Inn’s sign is likely to be the war memorial, suggesting that the painting was completed sometime after the 1920s and before the artist passed away in 1950…

Perhaps in the 1930s or 1940s…
