Eastern Black Redstart…
(Spotted in Mousehole, December 2016...)
He was keen-eyed like a Robin,
Rather sharp-billed and astute,
His coal bib looked quite ruffled
But his countenance remained resolute…
His flutterings were somewhat tetchy,
His under-feathers showed lush and red,
Contrasting with the yellow lichen
On Mousehole’s boulders of dread…
Yet incongruously he posed for cameras,
His intriguing gaze intense,
Displaying no doubt ‘his good side’
And precociously creating suspense…

Brought in by unusual weather conditions, two beautiful Eastern Black Redstarts had appeared in Mousehole…
I had only just arrived in Mousehole and spotted what at first I thought was a robin on the rocks along the shoreline.
I soon realised that it wasn't and took several photos, intending to find out what the bird was...
However, after walking along the shoreline pathway towards Newlyn, just below the main car-park, a bunch of people were hovering, expensive cameras in tow and I enquired what the birders were looking for.
The guy I spoke to told me that there was an Eastern Black Redstart about, to which I replied, "Oh, it's just back there on the rocks..."
Suddenly there was a manic rush of camouflage, cameras and keen bird spotters, all heading towards where I had just come from.
It was hilarious...
A pair of the birds stayed around for a couple of days, undeterred by the many cameras constantly clicking nearby...
