CARIBOU MEMORIAL... (My new poem about the Newfoundland Canadian war memorial at Monchy-le-Preux, France...)

 Caribou Memorial…

It rises in belligerent pose, with antlers as weapons raised,

Taunting the enemy, proud and confrontational, facing

Down a German advance, its rattle angry and resistant.

The bronze reindeer, rearing, wrathful and crazed,

Bucks atop a German bunker, rearing, its venom racing,

A Canadian regimental emblem, its regal bearing defiant…

The brilliant Newfoundland Memorial, at Monchy-le-Preux, France, which I was fortunate to see in 2012…

The bronze caribou is the only caribou memorial not standing upon Newfoundland granite but instead is built upon the ruin of a German bunker.

It faces in the direction of a devastating German onslaught on the Battalion during World War One…
