PREDATORY SLAMMER... (My new poem about a Pied Kingfisher at Luxor, November 2025...)

 Predatory Slammer…

It was a pesky little varmint, pied,

Compact, watchful, its black bill

A stiletto, primed, as it lingered

Upon a worn, metal rail.

Keen eyes scanned the murky river

Until the poised kingfisher was alerted

To its prey and with a sudden plunge, alighted

From its perch and arrowed into the Nile’s gloom…

The catch was clasped side to side

Of its wrenched wide beak, a kill

Not yet killed, a small bird encumbered

By a thrashing fish’s head and tail.

To quell the fish’s struggle and quiver,

The mottled predator soon asserted

Its dominance by body-slamming its blighted

Meal, turned it, swallowed it whole and confirmed its doom…
