STORM APPROACHING... (My new poem about another of Sue Nichol's paintings of Staithes, North Yorkshire...)

 Storm Approaching…

(Inspired by Sue Nichol’s painting of the same name…)

Harbourside reflections in persistent sunlight persevere

Across low tide shallows, scored and scratched like ice,

Or a cracked mirror, as dwellings bask bright, hiding their fear

Of what lurks behind: a sinister blackening sky, which in a trice

Will darken Staithes, furl it within its grim, severe

And leaden grip. A silent village becomes a weathered sacrifice

To lashing rain and savage gales within a destructive veneer:

A damnation, a storm-filled grip like that of a vice…

Pete Ray…

2nd November 2025…

The image invokes the quiet prelude to a vile storm, perfectly.

My images below, from visits to Staithes (you will love the incline to negotiate whilst returning to the car-park…) are pertinent, I hope…
