LONG EATON UNITED AT ST ANDREWS: A NEW POEM...

Blues At St Andrews

Cold grass stiffened
As if coated by icing sugar,
Or was stubble on an old man’s chin;
But the ground beneath
Had been hardened by frost
And lurked like predatory stone
To gash
Or tear, or threaten contusions…

The players stiffened
As if shy of full vigour,
Or were troubled, cautious to run;
But with icy breath
And disheartened by loss,
They lurched away, defeated, alone,
Abashed
And exploited, their eyes glaring confusion…

St Andrews played a very depleted Long Eaton United on January 2nd…
Thus eager to play on a rock-hard and in parts somewhat dangerous pitch, the hosts won 5-1.
Long Eaton were forced to field a player with the ‘flu’ and another returning from injury, just to make up the eleven.
One player was hurt on the surface but somehow carried on regardless…

St Andrews adapted to the conditions well and totally deserved their fine victory.
