POLPERRO: NEW POEM ABOUT JULIE ADLARD'S 'SUMMER NIGHT AT POLPERRO'...

JULIE ADLARD'S ARTWORK: 'SUMMER NIGHT AT POLPERRO'...

Polperro: Summer Night…

Always an expectancy,
Just by speaking Polperro’s name;
Preserved,
Reserved
To delight in
To see sights in
And marvel at its imperfections,
Its lack of directions…
Always poignancy,
Simply by hallowing the fame.

Always a vision,
 Thus by daubing reds lusty and deep
Papered over,
Glossed over
Its plight,
Its spite
And blotted at its untidiness,
Its lack of trimness…
Artistic illusion,
Its historic beauty to keep…

No resident gulls pace the pungent slime,
Such screaming scavengers, claws in grime;
The once spruce vessels list at an angle
Neat white ladders from the quayside dangle;
The brick-strewn haven, its harbour mud slick
Is camouflaged by a sunset’s spilt blood thick;
The quayside cottages, dulled and benign,
Now embarrassed and rouged by splattered red wine;
Polperro, on a summer evening glows like fire:
In Crimson, Carmine, Maroon and Desire…

I had been disappointed when I visited Polperro a few years back, for it looked dingy and seemed more prepared for selling fish and chips to city dwellers than clinging to any kind of heritage.

I was probably biased though because being taken there as a kid, it always seemed such a magical place…

Julie Adlard has somehow managed to add a vitality to Polperro with her evening reds…
