Mousehole Steps…
Those same shabby steep stone steps
Which have often strained my knees
To ascend from a wall where small craft
Are lodged during December days,
Support different feet from another time,
Those not of leisure but of graft
Around a working harbour in Mounts’ Bay’s
Western extremity, prey to vicious seas
Which climb like mardy monsters from the depths
And threaten chaos, or cause affray
And seiners’ expeditions to delay;
But those same shabby steep stone steps,
Part of Mousehole’s heritage, remain and appease…
