'BADGER LANE-CROSSING...': A POEM ABOUT TEMPLE BALSALL...

 Badger Lane-Crossing…

A short, beaten trail rose sharply

Onto a grassy lane-side bank,

Through a stiff hedge and into an arable field.

And the hole to a sett lay gaping, wholly,

As dusk enclosed the woodland, rank...

And blackened clouds were forced to yield

To a deep crimson horizon, imperturbably

Resolute, as a cool April evening sank

And nocturnal life was revealed…

Then a white flash moved beyond the copse

And I tarried with expectant breath baited;

A badger encroached slowly towards the sett,

Then regarded me, until its interest was sated…

Temple Lane, Temple Balsall.

We looked at each other.

The badger seemed satisfied.

It went underground.

It was venerable.

I called it Bede…
