FADING LIGHT, THE CUCKOO & THE HESITANT BADGERS... (TEMPLE BALSALL, 1ST MAY 2021...)

Fading Light, The Cuckoo & The Hesitant Badgers…

There was a stillness.

Yet despite the deep crimson flaring

Across the horizon, clouds heavy with charcoal grey

Hastened the May dusk’s arrival to darkness…

There was a listless

Cuckoo, its plaintive call sharing

Its presence, hidden in trees with something to say

About the evening sky’s flaming duskiness…

There was an unwillingness.

Badgers were slow to emerge, in daring

To find scattered peanuts amongst the array

Of leaves and twigs and untidy wilderness…

There was a weariness,

Yet shapes began to appear, sparing

Movement with heads alert but not venturing astray

Like spectres shifting in nightfall’s gloominess…
