Fading Light, The Cuckoo & The Hesitant Badgers…
There was a stillness.
Yet despite the deep crimson flaring
Across the horizon, clouds heavy with charcoal grey
Hastened the May dusk’s arrival to darkness…
There was a listless
Cuckoo, its plaintive call sharing
Its presence, hidden in trees with something to say
About the evening sky’s flaming duskiness…
There was an unwillingness.
Badgers were slow to emerge, in daring
To find scattered peanuts amongst the array
Of leaves and twigs and untidy wilderness…
There was a weariness,
Yet shapes began to appear, sparing
Movement with heads alert but not venturing astray
Like spectres shifting in nightfall’s gloominess…

Saturday 1st May but light faded quickly, despite the low, dark embers of sunset, for gathering and very dark shower clouds precipitated nightfall…
The badgers were scarce on this occasion but a couple were finally worth waiting in the cold for…
