The Gaping Hole & The Dank Path
A dampness pervaded about the lane,
Leaves on slender twigs, a succulent green
Had encroached like a curtain of net,
Obscuring the disorderly terrain
And the snuffling sounds unseen,
Of badgers at the rim of their sett…
An adult stopped upon its path, now sodden
And stared my way, though I made no discerning sound.
Through a small window in the creeping foliage
I watched it tarry upon its damp trail, well trodden:
Listening, sniffing the breeze and nuzzling the ground,
As its careful eyes betrayed a countenance sage…
