The Cuckoo & The Masked Snuffler…
The odorous damp soil pervaded
The lane, its verges now deep
Mud-prints of agricultural tyres,
Blackened by showery May days
And sodden by arching canopies
Of trees, whose leaves had cascaded
Rainwater upon taut barbed wires…
An harmonious cuckoo was insisting
From the oppressive woodland’s silhouette steep,
Before soon, through foliage and briar thorn,
One badger emerged in evening haze;
Snuffling, hustling, then seeming to freeze,
Its camouflage silently merging and misting,
Whilst concern upon its pallid mask was worn…
