Peer, Play & Scurry…
Pale peach enveloped the sun’s late setting
Behind scrubland trees and silhouetting
Them black, crooked and strangely awry,
As darkening clouds infiltrated the Warwickshire sky.
Silence reigned, bar an occasional squawking bird,
Or the tuneless honking of distant geese, absurd,
But the head of a badger suddenly erupted,
Its expression that of peace disrupted.

As three cubs from the sett came tumbling,
Shoving, scrapping and inevitably stumbling;
Twisting, turning, teasing and playful,
Interested, inquisitive, intolerant but watchful.
Darkness then across the undulating copse descended,
The badgers faded into nightfall and the vigil ended…
