Flights…
(from Suzy Sharpe’s painting, currently hanging in the Old Coastguard Hotel, Mousehole, Cornwall…)
Lifting pious wings high,
The first oystercatcher impresses
With auspicious wingspan shifting
Its height, sifting
The outlines of low tide rocks.
Yet seemingly it is quite unhurried,
Embracing a pallid, mottled sky…
Tensing scythed wings down,
The middle oystercatcher stresses
With menacing wingspan gliding,
Its moment biding
Above damp, dark grey rocks.
Yet seemingly it is not flustered,
Tracing targets with a harsh frown…
Straining crooked wings tight,
The third oystercatcher aggresses
With fighter wingspan driving
Its fuselage, striving
Towards crevices between rocks.
Yet seemingly it is untroubled,
Gracing the shoreline with darting flight…
