Moonlight, Cocooned…
(from a picture by Catherine Hyde…)
Illuminated by a pallid moon
The autumnal ground reflects
What might be a surface, frosted
Upon leaves wasted,
Tumbled and humbled,
Crumpled and encrusted,
Whilst a badger hesitates within its cocoon
Of darkness and privacy,
Of bleakness and sparsity…
It lurches into frenzied action,
Mithering at invasive drifts
Of glinting russet leaves,
Then intricately sifts
Through the detritus and weaves
Its discerning snout,
Snuffling, before it shifts
The superfluous out of the sett
With a pious satisfaction…
