Shifting Twigs & Hide & Seek…
I have shifted a branch, or a sturdy twig
From sett entrances, as if discarded
By antagonists poking inside,
Or by inhabitants, erecting a barrier
In the interests of feeling guarded…
One badger shifted a branch, a rogue twig
From an entrance, clearly irritated
By its presence baulking inside.
Yet with persistence, it removed the barrier,
As its splendid appearance demonstrated…
Another brock sifted through detritus behind
Me from its entrance, before nerves
Forced a drop from sight inside,
Or when bothered by an unfamiliar sound
And slipping from sight with athletic swerves…
I watched it feed over my shoulder behind
Me at the entrance to its sett, voraciously,
Then rapidly it dropped down inside
To the safety of its hole in the ground,
Before reappearing to munch again rapaciously…

One badger clearly had problems clearing away a twig which sat just inside its sett, whilst a bigger badger almost played hide and seek around its own sett entrance in the lively wind.
It hid, then appeared, then hid again, feeding on the morsels of food provided, until the dusk brought darkness over its movements…
