Sleet, Hail & A Pair Of Badgers…
En route the sky hung heavy ahead.
Grey, like a badger’s back.
Sleet then troubled the visibility
Until its irritation thickened into the dread
Of hail, which upon the lane studded
And against the vehicle thudded,
Obliterating the tranquility…
Despite the sky’s heavy charcoal gloom,
Clouds loomed bilious and black.
Sleet settled upon the locality
Like a patch of daisies in bloom
But an icy chill threatened
As the horizon’s sunset reddened,
Dramatising the fragility…
In the silence
And intense cold
Which chilled
The deserted copse
And the raw terrain,
I laid down food
Then hovered
And anxious, filled
With patient humility,
Tarried in dusk’s enticing presence…
In the distance,
An intense brock
Soon milled
About to feed
On the stark terrain.
The laid down food
Was devoured.
Soon though, stilled
By its own temerity,
It backed off in calculating reticence…

Two badgers actually emerged and it was excellent to see them feeding keenly on the provisions provided…
