Spooked By A Barefoot Apparition…
It wasn’t only the badgers
Or the resonant blackbirds, hidden
From view which were spooked.
It was me, too who turned and looked
Towards the lane, forbidden
To move, or scare the shifty cadgers…
The birdsong ceased.
Three badgers stared.
I glared through foliage
And saw an apparition,
Barefoot, treading the lane.
Shocked and incensed,
My incredulity was shared
By the badgers on the stage,
Which, spooked by the imposition,
Scooted to setts and there remained…

A fellow had moved onto a grass verge to allow my car to pass on arrival at the copse.
He wore a white T-shirt and walked barefoot, carrying his footwear.
As badgers fed and I watched, despite the loud car sounds and noisy aircraft which barely bothered the feeding mammals, they were literally spooked by the almost inaudible passing of the barefoot, silent pedestrian on his return stroll.
The badgers knew.
And scooted…
