The Tension & The Truck…
It was the time when daylight,
Although pallid and bright
Beyond the copse of shrubs and trees,
Begins to fail within the confines
Of the badgers’ territory,
Where cubs were feeding at their ease
And adults, more adept, more adroit
Adopted a more careful and wary
Presence, sniffing at the gentle breeze…
Just two remained, a distance apart
But the younger badger froze,
Statuesque with black-eyed stare.
Then, alarmed by a sound approaching,
It scampered fearfully into a hole.
Yet I heard nothing at all…
The adult badger then flinched with a start
And its inquisitive head rose,
Quite suddenly becoming aware
Of a turbulent truck encroaching
Along the lane and it dashed deep into a hole.
I watched transfixed, totally in thrall…
