Gannet Fishing At Mousehole…
Suddenly, something fell into the ocean.
The splash itself deserved attention,
Despite watery eyes chilled by a bitter December breeze.
The gannet, having plunged with motion
Vertical, rapid and at full extension,
Speared an unsuspecting fish with consummate ease.
It settled then to drift upon a choppy tide.
The predator, having swallowed its prey,
With salty sea-wash cleaned its lethal bill.
It preened itself as it continued to glide,
Then thrashed huge wings as if in an affray,
Before digesting its spectacularly hunted kill…

I saw the splash and watched the aftermath, managing to video the gliding seabird…
The following day I managed to video distant gannets diving for fish, albeit just prior to dusk…
