Squat upon a high ledge
The puffin languished, interested
In the behaviour of a razorbill nearby,
Which mithered near a crevice, on edge
Somehow, as bright spring sunlight molested
The craggy cliffs at Bempton, harshly high…
Alert upon its high cleft
The puffin surveyed the vicinity,
Orange feet splayed, head turning
About, discerning right and left,
The colourful bill, its unique extremity,
The admiration of avid watchers, earning…

Seeing two different puffins at Bempton Cliffs on 18th April 2023.
I had never actually seen a puffin before but the two which performed for delighted birdwatchers on that day were just beautiful and engaging…
I was privileged.
I really was…
