ANGLES AT THE WEST CLIFFS... (My third poem about old & new Porthtowan...)

 Angles At The West Cliffs…

(Old and new images of Porthtowan…)

The west cliff and its headland with buildings seems sparse,

Merely a few constructions near the summit visible,

Close to pathways, scored over time across the coast’s

Inclines and sharp declines towards Portreath.

The highlight, leaning, as if sliding at a crazy angle

Towards the dunes at Porthtowan, is the Beach Hotel, built

A little like a podium at the Olympic Games

But with such a view of the expanse of ocean and a forbidding

Rolling tide.

And the crude, rugged tin mining landscape lounges in dull grey…

The west cliff and headland these days seems less sparse,

More construction near the summit now visible,

Whilst pathways are less evident along the coast’s

Hidden angled edges round towards Portreath.

The feature, only slightly tilting at a more gentle angle

Towards the sand and stones are now beach apartments, built

A little less like a rostrum at the Olympic Games

But with such splendid views of the sea and its forbidding,

Rushing tide.

And green vegetation sprawls on the ancient rocks of jagged grey…

Another old postcard, another up to date image of the same scene…
