Tottenham Court Road To Marylebone…
Beneath the ground passengers were jostled
By the shaking, the juddering and the rushing
Of carriages, each person a fidgeting projectile
Simmering in the scream and the interminable heat.
At each platform silent commuters hustled
On board or alighted with no apparent pushing;
A challenge, a necessity, a mental trial,
Even avoiding stepping upon nearby feet.
Onward the underground train plundered and muscled
Through the darkness of tunnels, narrow and crushing,
As we manikins stood for mile upon congested mile,
Far below each chaotic, teeming London street…

22nd February 2024…
As an infrequent visitor to London, it’s sometimes a strange experience travelling on underground trains…
I was there to see the British Museum’s excellent ‘Legion: life in the Roman army’ exhibition and travelled from Tottenham Court Road to Marylebone en route to catching a busy train back to Solihull…
The above lines sum up my thoughts at the time…
