LUTTERWORTH TOWN 3-2 NORTHAMPTON O.N. CHENECKS: the report + screenshots of the goals...

Riley Strikes, As Swifts Down Chenecks…

Lutterworth Town 3-2 Northampton O.N. Chenecks

The Mowdog’s thoughts…

On goal chances created alone, Lutterworth were worth their victory on the day, despite some stubborn defending by their guests, who were grateful to ‘keeper Brad Lashley for making two or three important saves, notably from Matt Langham with a boot and then a leaping one from Ben Bradshaw’s free-kick taken from way downtown.

After Ben Adomako’s early near post downward header from Bradshaw’s corner had opened the scoring, the eager Swifts’ pressing gradually dissipated during the opening period. Despite winning a series of corners of their own however, Chenecks caused little danger to home goalie Warren Butlin. Then central striker Lewis Irwin, who had already shot wide from a decent position, broke on the left and clipped in a centre which midfielder Cam Mabbutt turned into the home net for the equaliser before the break.

Busy Chenecks’ skipper Luca Purse had already cleared an effort from Louis Samuels off his goal-line and he led his team well enough, organising and making several important clearances.

The second period was often bitty, typically interrupted by a swathe of substitutions but in truth, Chenecks looked the likelier outfit until Langham swept a pass to the unmarked Lutterworth full-back Callum Riley, all alone some 30 yards from goal and he fired a fine volley which dipped over Lashley to give his team a 2-1 lead.

Untidy play followed but little was created by the visitors, before a smart free-kick by the hosts saw a low shot from the right by Samuels patted away by Lashley into the path of Abdul Sunmonu, who slotted in from 8 yards and the game was over, despite a late goal by Irwin for Northampton, after a falling effort by replacement Ed Uka had been deflected into his path, 6 yards out.

It was too late though and thus Town claimed the three points…

Memorable moments…

Certainly the crowing cock in a garden near where I stood and certainly the number of times balls were skied and then flew into neighbourhood gardens on the bounce or on the full…

Balls were constantly being replaced, which was, er, interesting…

Bradshaw’s free-kick, Shaquille O’Neil Brooks’ confidence and concentration in the home defence, Bradshaw’s occasional vision and striker Langham’s centre-forward play often caught the eye for Swifts, whilst Samuels was spasmodically lively, as was replacement Divine Okyere, who ran the channels with aplomb.

Chenecks battled, Purse looked solid enough at the back and Raymond Poku made a few decent sorties forward.

No shortage of effort from the other players either but Lutterworth did display a strength and stubbornness which might just help them through tough games this term. Chenecks battled well and although skipper Luke Davis was sin-binned near the end, left-back Keiron Hobbs worked his flank enthusiastically at times.

The Riley goal was the most memorable moment of all though and despite their ascendancy at the time the right-back struck, subsequently, the visitors were unable to sustain their slight advantage after the ball had arched perfectly over the leaping Lashley’s grasping gloves…
