Harrier Races Inland…
On a causeway parallel to the distant stony North Sea shoreline,
I watched a Little Ringed Plover bustle in fussy, hurried style
Along the edge of a shallow pool, its yellow eye rings gleaming
In the surprisingly warm mid-March sunlight
Across Norfolk’s curious, coarse and reedy marshland…
Suddenly, a large predatory bird flew over my head in a grand
Display of languid, powerful, intimidating flight,
Its wingspan gliding and sparkling, the feathers streaming
In a fanned array of white and charcoal grey, its guile
Apparent as it swooped and soared with precision fine…
