Spare Ribs In Newlyn’s Old Harbour…
A bather sits on granite stones, gazing westward
And away from the spare ribs of an abandoned vessel, moored
At a jaunty angle against the old harbour wall,
Celebrated by Walter Langley’s works of art.
The rotting, skeletal boat carcass begs for attention,
Its usefulness outworn, its frame listing and discarded.
Sails and masts poke at the coastline of Mounts Bay, eastward
From Newlyn, watched by two men, seemingly in bon accord.
Sunlight brightens the environs of the Penzance and Marazion sprawl,
Once favoured by the Newlyn School’s Victorian art.
And a lugger’s full sail, taut and proud, announces its intention
To venture out to sea for Cornish fish, so highly regarded…
