POEM ABOUT GARETH SOUTHGATE, WRITTEN IN MAY 2001...

Leaving By the South Gate?

Despite his intelligent interview techniques,
A reasonable attitude
And his usually dependable defending,
The rank and file displayed no gratitude.

Despite his leadership,
Regular international recognition
And general club loyalty,
Angry supporters despised his ambition.

Despite his sought after views,
Plus vain efforts to encourage
And cajole club improvements,
Thoughtless, venomous fans disparaged.

Despite his will to win,
An honesty of opinion
And explanations for leaving,
He was rudely castigated by the minions.

Despite his sporting applause,
Of genuine appreciation
And his competence to the end,
Disloyal louts loathed his resignation.

Despite his prolonged departure,
Guarded pessimism
And a need to change direction,
One spectator spares any criticism…

Gareth Southgate was honest but left Aston Villa under a cloud. Spectators had still not forgiven him for moving away, despite his warnings about the ailing Midlands club.

I can only wish him good fortune should he be offered the England job...
