Dogs On Holiday: Are the Kids In Wrap-Around Care?
Leads are unclipped, dogs race onto the beach,
Their freedom quite out of hand;
Owners call to them ineffectually,
As they take a shit on the sand…
Small bags are opened, faeces collected,
As the pets set off again apace;
Owners call to them ineffectually
But their dogs find others, or footballs to chase…
Slings are used to chuck tennis balls,
Eager mutts rush off to retrieve;
Owners call to them ineffectually,
Whilst their pets get no peace, nor reprieve…
The stream on the beach is tainted
With detritus from the valley’s upper fields;
Owners call to their dogs ineffectually,
As they dribble from the ball their jaws wield…
Wet sand in the paws, wet sand in the fur,
The animals are finally restrained;
Owners call to them ineffectually,
As they yap and bark with necks craned…
The slobbering creatures will soon drop sand and hair
In the accommodation, causing a stink;
Owners call to their darlings ineffectually
But instead of that, why don’t they just THINK???

Mawgan Porth beach.
The stream to the side of the beach is never clean water and has produced nausea for surfers and bathers before now. Dogs splash in there and owners may not realise how unpleasant the rushing water actually is.
The poem is what I saw.
Many dogs frequented the beach during the last weekend of October but after penning the above words on 27th October, I ate at the Cornish Arms, St Merryn, where one cannot pre-book.
There were many children inside but a whole plethora of dogs… I could not believe it.
One woman had a dog at her feet at the bar and the other actually sitting on a bar-stool…
Am I missing something here?
I wondered whether some parents had taken their dogs on holiday and paid for their children to be looked after back at home.
When I owned dogs, I’m pretty sure it was the other way round…
The above poem is a light-hearted one.
Seriously…
